5.3. Syllabus
1- The birth of the modern state. From the French Revolution to the consolidation of the European liberal state.
2- Building the nation and the state in contemporary Spain.
3- Small states, big empires. The Western world and the shaping of empires in the nineteenth century until the Great War. Political models of Liberalism in Europe. Twientieth century models of government in the colonies.
4- The centrality of the state in the twentieth century: Great War, Russian Revolution, Fascism and the welfare state. The birth of international rule: From the League of Nations to the UN.
5- Policy framework and institutions of the twentieth century Spain: Crisis of the Restauración regime, Primo´s Dictatorship, Second Republic, Civil War and Francoism.
6- The political transition in Spain and the 1978 constitutional regime of 1978. Description of the state´s political and institutional framework.
7- The construction of Europe. From the Marshall Plan to the European Union. Milestones, evolution and process. Spain and Europe in the second half of the twentieth century.
8- The Spanish democracy in action. Parties, institutions, branches of government, autonomous communities. Political developments.
9-Building the twentyfirst Century: new social challenges and the impact of the economic crisis. Crisis of representation mechanisms and social mobilization in Spain, Europe and the world.
